**LESSON GUIDE**

**STEP 1 : Connect**

Review velocity from previous day.

**STEP 2 : Engage**

Use cars built from previous day. Have students gather data on their cars. Use a set distance and measure the time it takes for the car to travel that distance. I recommend 1 meter. (refer to student handout below)

**STEP 3 : Teach**

Average speed = distance / time Show students how to calculate the speed. If necessary allow students to use calculators. Review vocabulary numerator and denominator. Have students calculate the speed from their data. Complete student notes together as a class.

**STEP 4 : Practice**

Use whiteboards, plickers, or whatever is comfortable. Give students various problems to solve and check to see if students are successful. Re-teach if necessary. Practice problems attached in handouts.

**STEP 5 : Close**

Calculate speed on worksheet.
