Exploration Packs – Discover the Functions of littleBits

Exploration Packs

Learners work through a short checklist while they explore with a small set of littleBits. In this lesson there are suggestions 6 Exploration Packs, each with different input and output bits. Each group learns about the bits in their packs then shares that learning with the whole group.

This lesson was created using bits from the Pro Library, if you don’t have the bits listed, use what you have available.

STEP 1 : Prep: 15 – 20 minutes prior to class

Prepare the Exploration Packs as described in the “Exploration Pack Prep” document attached.

STEP 2 : Intro: 5 – 10 minutes

If your learners have not already been introduced to LittleBits please take time to show them the proper care and handling of the bits. Learners will then listen as you explain that their job is to play with the bits in order to answer the questions on the “Exploration Pack Checklist”. They will be mindful that they will report their findings back to the whole group. Younger learners may be given the single task of discovering what the bits in their pack do.

STEP 3 : Explore: 10 – 15 minutes

Learners will form teams of 4 or less. Each team will collect an Exploration Pack and find a safe place to work. NOTE: Some packs contain USB power and will need to be used close to an outlet. If this isn’t possible in your space, replace the USB powers with Battery powers. Learners will explore and make notes of what they learn on their checklists. Teacher should circulate, watching for safe handling of bits, appropriate team work, and giving guidance where needed.

STEP 4 : Share: 10 – 15 minutes

Learners will return their attention to the whole group while each team takes turn sharing what they’ve learned.

STEP 5 : Clean-up

Each team will disassemble their circuits, place everything back into the container, and return their Exploration Pack to the teacher.
