LESSON GUIDE

STEP 1 : Activate Prior Knowledge

Explore the idea of a first day at a school with students. Ask how it would look and feel. Discuss empathy for new students. Introduce the Hogwarts first year ritual. Have a “student expert” tell how the sorting hat and house groups work.

STEP 2 : Acquire new learning

Tell students they will be part of a mock sorting. Encourage them to imagine spending their school career in each house. Tell them their reaction will be part of the assignment. Making the sorting hat is described on my projects page: http://littlebits.cc/projects/animatronic-functional-sorting-hat Bring out the sorting hat. Allow each student to experience the sorting.

STEP 3 : Apply concepts

Journal: Students will write a journal entry called “My life in _______________” They are to explore the initial reaction and then how their schooling would look. Would they embrace or resist their house? 2 paragraphs minimum.

STEP 4 : Follow up

Discuss the entries and reactions the following day. Great intro for students reading Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (which is about a discordant sort). Have students create little bits circuits to explore a different story’s emotional elements.
